Having a lot of open source to choose from is definitely a good thing. However, the downside is that you have to do some actual work to figure out which is best for your project. So here's are some rules of thumb on how to quickly evaluate and pick an open source library. Specific emphasis on "library" since our intent is to incorporate it into our own work as opposed to simple usage.

One thing that people tend to forget is that open source isn't just about Linux. Apple uses open source stuff in it's products - like it's kernel & web browser for instance - and even MSFT has released a couple of things as open source (and I'm not talking about their b.s. "shared source" license, which doesn't even deserve consideration). In addition, there's actually a lot of great open source software that runs on Windows.

After working on several large scale PHP projects, and writing a lot of PHP code, I’ve discovered a number of tools that improve code quality, streamline rollouts, and generally make life as a PHP developer a whole lot easier. Many of these tools probably deserve a post of their own. But, since some people aren’t even aware that these tools exist, I figured I’d start there. So, without further ado, here’s my list of tools that every PHP programmer should know about.
